What Exactly Is Psoriasis — and How Is It Different from Eczema or Dermatitis?
If you’ve ever had red, itchy, dry, or scaly skin, you might have wondered — is it eczema, dermatitis, or psoriasis? Sometimes, even doctors are not sure… so let’s understand today what these skin conditions are and how to differentiate before your healing journey begins…
Both these skin conditions can look similar, but they’re quite different in how they start and behave.

What Psoriasis Really Is??
Psoriasis is an immune-related condition, not just a skin issue.
It happens when the body’s defence system becomes overactive and speeds up skin cell turnover.
Normally, our skin renews itself every 3–4 weeks — but in psoriasis, this happens in just a few days.
The new skin cells pile up before the old ones can shed, creating thick, red, scaly patches.
These patches are often seen on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back — but they can appear anywhere.
Sometimes, it can also affect the joints, causing stiffness or pain (called psoriatic arthritis).

“What Triggers Psoriasis ??”
Common triggers include:
  • Stress and emotional strain
  • Cold, dry weather
  • Certain medications or infections
  • Hormonal changes
  • Cuts, scratches, or other skin injuries
When you identify and manage your triggers, flare-ups become much easier to control.

“How It Differs from Eczema or Dermatitis??”
Eczema is a complex inflammatory condition often triggered by allergies, genetics, and environmental factors.
They make the skin red, itchy, dry, and sometimes oozing — and the itching can be intense.
Patches of dry, red, and sometimes leathery skin with less defined borders can develop into swollen bumps that may ooze or crust over in severe cases. Typically causes intense, severe itching.

Dermatitis is a broad term for skin inflammation that can arise from irritants, allergens, or underlying medical conditions.

While eczema is a specific type of dermatitis, other types exist that have different causes and characteristics.
